Book Review: Paper Towns by John Green

LIFESTYLE

If you havn't heard or seen this book, you're basically living under a rock. I read this book last summer (2014) and spent 5 days reading a few hours in the afternoon. The first thing that made me buy this book was the description on the back of the book and the authors previous success of the fault in our stars. I figured i'd read this book since the genre was leaning more towards my taste.

I'd say that it has a similar atmosphere like in the fault in our stars, it gave me the same vibe, both the books and movies.

The main character is Quentin Jacobsen ''Q'', a highschool senior who lives next door to Margo Spiegelman. They grew up together but drifted apart in high school. Not until one night when Margo Spiegelman shows up in Q's window and asks him to join her on a quest of vengeance and their life is forever changed. Sounds like an adventure? wait for it..

The next day, Margo doesn't show up in school and the mystery begins.. dun dun dun... So what happened to Margo Spiegelman? It's comedy, drama and mystery all in one book.

To be honest, it's a little too lighthearted of a book for me since i like the dark mystery genre and not the lovey dovey highschool romance - it's just not my thing. But! but... it's still a good easy travel read when going to the beach or the airport.

I felt like Margo was trying so hard to be mysterious just to be. I felt like she was using people without really thinking what if, but at the same time i connected to her because of her eye for mystery and hunger for adventure. I really like when she describes the paper towns, something i think i could have easily said myself.

Q on the other hand was like an obsessive little boy who just needs a bit of mystery in his boring life. I really did not like him, maybe because he was the exact opposite of Margo and i dont know what exactly he was looking for throughout the whole book. Is it to be with Margo? Because they didn't really talk much until the night she showed up and if he knew she was still out there on her own, she obviously didn't want anything to do with him. It's a childhood crush he needs to get over but i admire his dedication for trying to find her, just would not obsess over her dissapearance since it was clear she like to play games of vengeance and breadcrumbs.
Maybe he was hoping for something.. like me while reading the book.

It's funny, it's witty and it's an easy read, i overall give it a readable 3/5 rating.
